Single feather from an extinct bird sells for record-breaking $28,000

HOW much will you pay for a single feather?

A rare feather that belonged to an extinct huia bird sold for more than $28,000 at an auction house in New Zealand.

The amount made it the world’s most expensive feather sold at an auction.

Despite being more than a hundred years old, the feather was still in good condition which was one of the terms set by the auction.

Another condition set was that the feather should not leave New Zealand.

The huia bird was native to the North Island and holds a significant spot in Maōri culture.

The Maōri people considered the bird’s feathers sacred and were worn by high-ranking individuals of the indigenous group.

Overhunting by the European settlers and deforestation were the main reasons behind the special bird’s extinction.

Its high cultural significance and the people’s penchant for things related to extinct species made it a significant collector’s item.
