SHAPING the development of children’s potential, grace, and talent has become the center of advocacy of Samuel R. Soliven, current Director III of the Bureau of Curriculum Development of the DepEd Central Office, is one of the awardees of the Metrobank Foundation, Inc. (MBFI) Award for Continuing Excellence and Service (ACES) this 2024.
This is proof of his consistent provision of quality education to the youth, as a good example of teacher and leader and service to schools, since he was awarded as one of the MBFI Outstanding Teacher of the Philippines in 2003.
He is a product of the Philippine Educational Placement Test (PEPT) in 1986. Promised to his PEPT that since second year high school he could go to college.
He said, “due to the difficulties in life, I [stopped out of high school] for three years and passing the PEPT gave me hope and many opportunities.”
He became a working student in the college and obtained a Bachelor in Secondary Education.
When he was a teacher until he became part of the DepEd Central Office officers, he often shared, especially to the students, that PEPT brought good to students who quit because of hardships and challenges in life.
As a former High School Science and Mathematics teacher, he developed a book that resulted from the lack of learning material to do science investigatory projects and called it Science Research and Statistics.
Because of this, more students and teachers have been helped on how to create and teach in doing research projects. She also wrote the Worktext in High School Geometry with Focus on Practical Work and Portfolio Making. He also developed a module for Integrated Science and Technology that served as the basis for his making a teaching script for School-on-Air / Pagadalan iti Tangatang over DWRV Bayombong, using the Ilocano dialect to teach Science and Technology.
Aside from his experiences in the field of education, he participated in outreach programs that helped students, including Love Lingay Labbu Outreach and his providing USB and Radio for Oplan Karununungan (U R OK!) during pandemic time with the help of friends and MBFI.
“I believe that the best instructional materials of teachers are their positive experiences and their resolve to help improve the quality of education. Such is the great opportunity to be part of a bigger educational mission given by God,” said Dir. Soliven.
