Sudan conflict intensifies as displaced exceeds 4 million

THE Sudanese Army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) engaged in heavy fighting this week, with more than 4 million people displaced in the ongoing crisis.

The warring factions continue to exchange fire in the capital Khartoum and surrounding areas.

The latest clashes have killed more than 20 civilians while electricity and communications were cut in the region for several hours.

Fierce fighting erupted on Monday after the Sudanese Army launched air attacks and heavy artillery in an attempt to take control of a bridge across the River Nile used by the RSF to move reinforcements and weapons.

With the war showing no signs of abating, a spokesperson for the United Nations Refugee Agency warned the fighting has triggered outbreaks of disease and an increase in malnutrition.

Moreover, 14 million children are in dire need of humanitarian support according to the United Nations Children’s Agency.

Latest data from the Sudanese Health Ministry showed the deadly clashes resulted in over 3,000 deaths and more than 6,000 injuries since it started on April 15.
