Sudan demands return to African Union

SUDAN’s Defense Forces Commander Abdel Fattah al-Burhan expressed confidence that the country would soon be back as a member of the African Union (AU).

Al-Burhan, who also serves as chairman of Sudan’s Transitional Sovereign Council, made the remarks when he hosted delegates of the African Union High-Level Panel on the Resolution of the Conflict in Port Sudan.

The African Union was established to promote international cooperation and unity among all 55 members states in the African continent.

Sudan was removed from the organization in October 2021 after a military coup overthrew the government led by Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok.

This was followed by the ongoing civil war in Sudan which erupted in April 2023 amid an ongoing power struggle between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces.

Nearly 14,000 people have lost their lives while millions have been internally displaced or have escaped to neighboring countries.
