THAILAND’s Move Forward Party achieved a landslide victory during the national elections on Sunday, sending a message to the powerful military-royalist elite who had ruled the country for years.
The race that will determine Thailand‘s future took place on Sunday.
The radical pro-democracy agenda of Thailand’s Move Forward Party won the hearts of most voters in this year’s general elections after promising reforms to curb the conservative royalist and military establishment’s long-term rule.
For analysts, the reformist opposition’s landslide win sends a powerful message to nine years of military-backed rule.
As polling stations closed on Sunday, Move Forward Party finished ahead of the pack with 151 seats while the populist Pheu Thai Party backed by the billionaire Shinawatra family finished a close second with 141 seats.
With almost all votes counted on Monday, the two leading political parties were projected to win more than 280 seats in the 500-member House of Representatives.
Meanwhile, Thailand’s Move Forward and Pheu Thai Party confirmed that they will form a coalition composed mainly of pro-democracy groups that oppose the ruling military government.
Despite plans to form a coalition, uncertainty remains about whether they would be able to form the next government due to Thailand’s parliamentary rules that allow 250 members of a military-appointed Senate to vote on the prime minister.
