Thailand sees surge of Chinese tourists amid relaxed visa rules

MORE Chinese tourists are expected to flock to Thailand this year as the permanent visa-free travel policy is set to take effect on the 1st of March.

The government granted Chinese citizens a temporary visa waiver on September 25, 2023, and is scheduled to end on February 29, 2023.

Last month, Thailand and China agreed to permanently waive visa requirements for citizens from both countries starting on March 1, 2024.

The policy will allow stays of up to 30 days

The visa-free policy is the government’s strategic move to attract more Chinese tourists and boost the economy.

Thailand is hoping to attract 35 million visitors overseas by the end of 2024, including 8.2 million from China.

Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin said the government aims to extend visa-free travel privileges to more countries besides China.
