THAILAND sets its eyes for the urgent membership of BRICS – an influential group of emerging economies- after the Thai cabinet approved the government’s plan to formally apply last month.
Thailand’s goal to be part of BRICS will make it the first Southeast Asian nation to join the bloc once its membership will be officially approved.

The Thai Cabinet finally approved the government’s plans to apply officially for BRICS membership in a meeting a few weeks ago.
BRICS – which stands for the name of its core members Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa – underwent recent expansion in recent months by adding Saudi Arabia, Iran, Ethiopia, Egypt, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in January 2024.
Foreign Affairs Minister Maris Sangiampongsa said Thailand is hoping to be invited at the upcoming BRICS summit in October.
The Thai foreign minister presented the idea at the meeting of Brics foreign ministers in Russia on Tuesday
Non-member countries aspiring to join BRICS have been invited to participate in the 16th BRICS Summit in Kazan, Russia, from Oct 22 to 24.
