Thailand’s public health ministry signs bill to ban recreational cannabis

SUPPORTERS of cannabis legalization slammed a bill signed by Public Health Minister Cholnan Srikaew that aims to limit the use of marijuana only for medical purposes.

The bill states that cannabis and cannabis-related products will be limited to medical and health purposes only.

The proposed measure will ban advertising and marketing campaigns for cannabis buds and extracts as well as other cannabis products.

Meanwhile, Thailand considers smoking marijuana in public as illegal despite relaxing its cannabis laws.

If it turns into law, offenders of the measure will be slapped with hefty fines or prison sentences of up to one year for offenders – or both.

The relaxed cannabis laws in Thailand attracted locals and foreigners alike and resulted in a lucrative industry.

To recall, Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin promised to limit the use of cannabis for medical purposes within six months.

Thailand became the first country in Asia to legalize the use and purchase of cannabis leaves in February 2021 and the whole plant in June 2022.

An earlier draft bill introduced in November of last year failed to win approval from the parliament.
