Thailand’s Songkran Festival receives certification as intangible cultural heritage

THE United Nations Educational, Social and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) declared Thailand’s Songkran Festival as part of humanity’s intangible cultural heritage.

Thailand’s traditional New Year is usually celebrated in mid-April after the rice harvest.

UNESCO described the annual celebration as a time when people reunite with their families and pay their respects to older adults and ancestors.

The pouring of water symbolizes cleansing, reverence, and good fortune.

It is also dubbed as the water festival of Thailand because of the water fights.

For this year, the government plans to celebrate Songkran not just for three days but the whole month of April, in all 77 provinces across Thailand.
