Thailand’s visa-free travel policy lures Chinese tourists

EFFECTIVE March 1, 2024, Thailand will permanently waive visa requirements for Chinese travelers.

The measure is on top of the temporary visa waiver set to expire next month.

The travel scheme caused thousands of Chinese tourists to visit the country since the start of the year.

Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin announced the measure on January 2.

More than 600,000 foreign tourists visited Thailand in the first week of 2024 alone, according to the Thai Ministry of Tourism and Sports.

Of this number, a staggering 80,000 came from China, making it the top market for January.

To recall, Thailand had previously granted a temporary visa waiver status for visitors from China.

The waiver took effect on September 25, 2023, and ends on February 29, 2024.

Thailand recorded 28-M international tourist arrivals in 2023 and aims to attract up to 40-M foreigners this year.
