THE Philippines’ oldest English broadsheet recently marked 125 years of dedicated service, committed to keeping its readers well-informed for making better life choices.
Strength is often measured by the years it stands.
This adage aptly applies to ‘’The Manila Times,’’ (TMT) the long-standing English newspaper of the Philippines, which recently celebrated its 125th year of service to the Filipino people.
The event drew the participation of TMT partners and friends, all savoring the success that has been built upon integrity over the years.
TMT Chairman and CEO, Dante ‘’Klink’’ Ang II, shared insights on what has sustained the business through the years.
‘’Well, you know one of the things that we’ve done very differently from other newspapers is to assemble a pool of writers who have different views on what’s happening. I think it’s been very helpful in serving our readers because they see different points of view,’’ according to Dante ‘’Klink’’ Ang II, Chairman and CEO, The Manila Times.
Established by Thomas Gowan on October 11, 1898, The Manila Times is proudly recognized as the first daily English-language broadsheet in the Philippines.
TMT is the oldest English broadsheet and the oldest English daily in Asia. Despite facing two closures—first from 1930 to 1945, and later during Martial Law in 1972 when it was among the silenced media outlets—The Manila Times made a triumphant return on February 5, 1986, just days before the EDSA People Power Revolution.
Throughout the years, the newspaper changed ownership, with notable proprietors including former President Manuel Quezon (1917-1921), the Roces family (1927-1989), and John Gokongwei (1999).
On August 8, 2001, Dante Arevalo Ang assumed the roles of publisher and chairman of The Manila Times, pledging to provide accurate and comprehensive news coverage.
Today, The Manila Times not only reaches its audience through print but also online, delivering information to readers across geographical boundaries.
Their mission is to empower readers to make well-informed choices.
‘’Well, it means helping the people make good decisions… We try to report what’s going on, but I think it’s more important that we help them understand what’s going on. So, the nation is only as good as its people, and our aim is to help our people become more effective, more productive, and readier to contribute to nation-building by providing the information they need to do so,’’ Ang said.
‘’Well, it’s a pleasure to work with the folks at The Manila Times. It’s great to have the opportunity to share our story, especially through the various media outlets of The Manila Times,’’ Suiee Suarez VP for Corporate Affairs, Aboitiz Power, stated.
‘’It’s an honor for LT Group and the other companies under Lucio Tan. We are grateful to be one of their avid supporters of The Manila Times,’’ according to Julius Vicente Eton Properties Philippines, Inc.
‘’Oh definitely, 125 is a significant milestone. We congratulate them on their 125th Anniversary,’’ Honey Reyes Head of Corporate Communications, BDO, said.
SMNI News and The Manila Times have been partners since the 2022 election campaign period.

Through shared cooperation, hand in hand for nation-building.
‘’First of all, I want to thank Pastor Apollo C. Quiboloy for giving me the opportunity to have a program on your network. I hope it has been useful to SMNI’s audience in understanding the topics we discuss on our show, which revolves around Business and Politics.’’
‘’I would like to express my gratitude to our readers, supporters, and partners of The Manila Times. We would not have reached this significant… or important milestone of 125 years without your help,’’ Ang stated.
