Before the inspection, Secretary Arthur Tugade summoned several transport officials for a conference.
That was promptly followed by the inspection of the quarantine facility being set up at the Eva Macapagal Terminal, which is appointed to serve the needs of persons showing mild COVID-19 symptoms.
This Quarantine Terminal is adjacent to the two docked quarantine ships commissioned by the DOTr with private shipping and logistics company 2GO, to accommodate repatriates who do not show symptoms and have not undergone COVID-19 testing. These ships started operating yesterday, 12 April 2020.
Subsequently, Secretary Tugade, together with Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) Commandant Admiral Joel Garcia led a short commissioning ceremony of the BRP Gabriela Silang (OPV-8301).
Gabriela Silang, the most advanced aluminum hull offshore patrol vessel (OPV) in the world to date, shall be utilized as a transport ship for frontline health workers, medicines, personal protective equipment, and other medical supplies to regional hospitals across the country, to assist the government in its fight for public health and safety against the COVID-19 threat.
Joining Secretary Tugade in the inspection were DOTr Undersecretary for Administrative Affairs Artemio Tuazon, Asec. for Procurement and Project Implementation Giovanni Lopez, Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) General Manager Jay Santiago, Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) Administrator Robert Empedrad, and Office for Transportation Security (OTS) Administrator Usec. Raul Del Rosario.
