TURKISH President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is set to hold talks with his Egyptian counterpart Abdel Fattah el-Sisi on February 14, Valentine’s Day.
The trip marks Erdoğan’s first visit to Egypt since the two countries resumed diplomatic ties in 2021.
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan confirmed the visit, stating that both leaders will discuss bilateral and regional issues including trade, energy, and security.
The foreign minister said Erdoğan agreed to supply Egypt with drones.
The agreement marks the first known arms deal between Cairo and Ankara since both governments agreed to upgrade their diplomatic relations last year.
Tensions between the two nations deteriorated following the military coup led by current Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi in 2013.
The coup d’etat resulted in the removal of ambassadors from their respective countries.
Turkiye has tried to mend ties with Egypt since 2020 and both countries re-appointed ambassadors to each other’s capital months later.
