Two more people missing after devastating heavy rain, flooding in Brazil’s Rio de Janeiro

AT least 12 people have lost their lives, more people have been missing, and dozens more have been injured due to the torrential rains that devastated Rio de Janeiro.

The State’s Governor, Cláudio Castro, expressed solidarity with the families of the victims and stated that there is still much to be done.

“We are committed to continuing our work so that, at the end of this administration, we can deliver resilience, prevention, and support work, better than the one we received,” according to Gov. Cláudio Castro, Rio de Janiero, Brazil.

2,400 fire department personnel responded to the devastation, and used drones, aircraft, sniffer dogs, and rescue specialists, among others.

Among the state government’s priorities are helping the population through the recomeçar card, cleaning the streets, and finding resources for essential works in the affected municipalities.

The citizens are joining together to help one another.

Residents were seen carrying an elderly man on a mattress in the middle of the flood to save him from the flood in his home.

Rio de Janeiro has been under a state of emergency since Sunday, and recent local reports say that the volume of rain normally expected for the whole month of January was received in certain areas of the capital in just 24 hours.
