U.S. bombers land in Sweden for first time

FOR the first time in modern history, U.S. bombers jet have landed in Sweden to train side by side with the Nordic nation.

The heavy bombers landed at Norrbotten Wing located in Lulea-Kallax airport in Northern Sweden.

Norrbotten Wing is Sweden’s northernmost air wing and is a strategically important area for the Nordic nation.

The purpose of the exercise is to train Swedish troops in defending themselves and their territory.

The Swedish Air Force had regular training with the Bomber Task Force but this is the first time the heavy bombers landed on Swedish territory.

The two B-1B Lancers belonging to the 7th Bomb Wing, a US Air Force unit, have been deployed to Europe as part of a strategic rotation, with their operational base located in the United Kingdom.

Nicknamed the “Bone,” the heavy bomber is capable of tracking, targeting, and engaging moving vehicles as well as self-targeting and terrain-following modes.

With a weapon load of 37,000 pounds, the B-1B can fly 4,600 miles without refueling and is promoted by the US military as the most dangerous supersonic bomber on Earth.

The training comes as the Swedish parliament released a report on Monday stating that although Russian ground forces were tied up in Ukraine, other types of military attacks against Sweden could not be ruled out.

The Swedish military did not disclose how long the US bombers will stay in Sweden.
