U.S. does not support Taiwan independence—Biden

U.S. President Joe Biden gave a blunt message after Taiwan elected William Lai, or Lai Ching-te as their new president on Saturday.

Before leaving for Camp David, Biden was asked on his thoughts about the Taiwan election, to which he said quote we do not support independence.

“We do not support independence,” Pres. Joe Biden, United States of America stated.

Biden has previously stated that U.S. military forces would defend Taiwan, despite China’s push for a peaceful reunification, however, Beijing has declined to rule out the use of force in the event of a formal declaration of Taiwan independence.

Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Mao Ning stressed that Beijing considers the Taiwan election a domestic affair for China, and opposes U.S. interference.

“Regardless of the outcome of the elections, it will not change the basic fact that there is only one China in the world and Taiwan is part of China, and it will not change the general consensus of the international community to adhere to the One-China Principle,” Mao Ning, Spokesperson, Chinese Foreign Ministry stated.

Mao also said that the outcome of the voting in Taiwan, did not change the status of the territory, in any way.

Biden’s unofficial delegation visits President-elect William Lai in Taiwan

Meanwhile, an unofficial U.S. delegation travelled to Taiwan and met President-elect William Lai to reaffirm the rock-solid support of Washington to Taipei.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken also sent Lai a message of congratulations following the result of the elections.

It can also be noted that Blinken stressed that U.S. is committed to maintaining cross-strait peace and stability and that such collaboration should further their longstanding unofficial relationship and be consistent with the U.S. One-China Policy.

Blinken is referring to the policy in which Washington recognizes and has formal ties with Beijing rather than Taipei.

On the other hand, China called Blinken’s message a violation of U.S.’s commitment to maintain only unofficial ties with Taiwan.
