The Kuwaiti royal court confirmed news of the death of the Emir of Kuwait, Sheikh Nawaf Al Ahmad Al Sabah, on Saturday.
The 86-year-old ruler died after getting in and out of hospital several times this year. Sheikh Nawaf ruled Kuwait for six decades until his death on Saturday.
Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman made an effort to travel to Kuwait to offer his condolences in person.
Sheikh Nawaf’s half-brother, 83-year-old Sheikh Meshal Al Ahmad Al Jaber, will replace him as Emir of Kuwait.
At 83, Sheikh Meshal is believed to be the world’s oldest crown prince.
