UK, Chile enhance trade ties, emphasize values of democracy & open trade

THE United Kingdom and Chile convened in London on September 13, 2023, for their 4th trade dialogue and 2nd ministerial meeting under the UK-Chile Association Agreement.

In a joint statement, officials emphasized their shared values of democracy and open trade.

They highlighted the UK’s accession to the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) and its potential for strengthening global trade ties.

The success of Chile Day in London, particularly in financial services, was acknowledged as a boost to trade and investment.

Both sides committed to modernizing their trade relationship, focusing on goods, digital technologies, and financial services, leveraging the CPTPP framework.

Officials discussed gender equality in trade and sustainable energy solutions.

They addressed critical mineral management, particularly lithium, emphasizing environmental responsibility.

Improving opportunities for women in trade and creating business-friendly environments, especially for SMEs, were central themes. Multilateral trade issues were discussed, with an emphasis on WTO reform.

Officials will monitor progress across these areas, with updates planned for the next trade dialogue in July 2024.
