A volcano has erupted on the Reykjanes Peninsula of Iceland, and about 4,000 residents were evacuated from the small fishing town of Grindavik earlier this month due to intense quake activity.
Images and videos posted on social media showed lava bursting from the volcano.
The president of Iceland said that the civil defense has closed off the affected area, and advised the public to remain vigilant.
Meanwhile, Bjarni Benediktsson the foreign minister of Iceland, said that there are no disruptions to flights to and from Iceland, and international flight corridors remain open.
The jets of lava are quite high, so it appears to be a powerful eruption at the beginning, as said by the foreign minister.
The region around Reykjavik has been experiencing an increase in quake activity since late October.
And the whole of Iceland has been on high alert for a possible volcanic eruption for weeks, and in November, authorities ordered residents to leave Grindavik as a precaution.
There were no reports of injuries so far.
