AFP prepares contingency plan amid China’s unilateral fishing ban

ARMED Forces of the Philippines (AFP) reiterated its strong opposition to China’s unilateral fishing ban in the South China Sea, emphasizing its lack of legal basis.

Spokesperson Colonel Francel Margareth Padilla highlighted the Philippines’ adherence to UNCLOS and the 2016 arbitral decision supporting Filipino fishermen’s rights in the West Philippine Sea.

“The Department of Foreign Affairs has also mentioned that this ban, which is in effect from May 1 to September 16, actually exceeds China’s rightful maritime claim under UNCLOS. Moreover, this breaches our previously issued arbitral decision in 2016, which upholds the fishing privileges of Filipino fishermen in the West Philippine Sea,” according to Col. Francel Margareth Padilla, Spokesperson, AFP.

Regarding potential Chinese actions, Padilla mentioned AFP’s prepared contingency plans, which remain undisclosed to prevent Beijing from monitoring military movements.

She underscored AFP’s commitment to constitutional principles and national sovereignty.

“We have contingency plans that are in place in case these ICAD activities of the Chinese will pursue. The Armed Forces of the Philippines are guided by the Constitution and the principles of national sovereignty,” Padilla added.

The AFP spokesperson asserted that no foreign entity has the authority to restrict the Philippines’ sovereign rights in its exclusive economic zone.

Philippine ships continue patrols in WPS despite the departure of China’s ‘monster ship’

Meanwhile, Padilla revealed that China Coast Guard 5901, also known as “The Monster” ship, has already left the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone (EEZ).

Despite this, AFP vessels continue patrols in the West Philippine Sea, particularly around Bajo de Masinloc, to deter illegal activities.

Padilla emphasized AFP’s unwavering commitment to defend the country’s sovereignty and safeguard its interests, including ensuring the safety of Filipino fishermen.

“So, what we will do is to intensify our security measures in our seas and conduct broader cooperation with various entities, such as [insert], utilizing a whole-of-government approach,” Padilla concluded.
