ON Friday, Canada’s Defense Minister Anita Anand announced that Canada is buying almost $40 million worth of military aid including fuel, sniper rifles, and radios for Ukraine.
This announcement was made in Ramstein, Germany during the eleventh meeting of the Ukraine defense contact group. The said event was hosted by U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin.
Canadian Defense Minister Anand’s announcement includes a $34.6-million contribution to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Ukraine assistance package trust fund.
In this, 3.3 million liters of fuel will be supplied to war-torn Ukraine.
$2.5 million will be used to buy 40.50 caliber sniper rifles and ammunition which includes spare parts and accessories.
While 16 new radio sets worth $2 million will also be given.
All in all, totaling to $39 million.
Previously, Canada committed 8 leopard ii battle tanks to Ukraine, all of which have been delivered to Poland.
Meanwhile, the government of Canada is planning to give to Ukraine a giant Russian cargo plane that Canada confiscated after it landed on Canadian soil just 4 days after Russia started to invade Ukraine in February 2022.
Despite Canada’s new military package for Ukraine, reports say that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told NATO leaders privately that Canada will never meet the military alliance’s defense spending which equates to 2% of each member country’s GDP.
