China removes Li Shangfu as defense minister; ex-FM Qin Gang removed as state councilor

CHINA has removed Li Shangfu as defense minister while ex-Foreign Minister, Chin Gang was also removed as state councilor of the country.

As reported by CCTV, Chinese Defense Minister Li Shangfu was also fired two months after disappearing from public view.

Li was removed from his position as a member of the Central Military Commission and as one of the 5 state councilors.

The decision was approved by the NPC, although it did not name any successor to Li.

To recall, Li was appointed as China’s defense minister in March, but he has not been seen in public since late August.

Meanwhile, Ex-Top Envoy, Chin Gang, was also removed as a state councilor on Tuesday.

No explanation was given for the removal of Li and Chin.

Chin’s replacement, Wang Yi, is in the U.S. this week to meet with Secretary of State Antony Blinken and National Security Adviser, Jake Sullivan.

Reports say that the move could potentially pave the way for a possible first meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Joe Biden in a year.
