Cyprus, Israel close to agreeing on humanitarian aid corridor for Gaza

THE Republic of Cyprus remains committed to helping build a maritime humanitarian corridor to deliver constant and large quantities of life-saving aid to Gaza.

Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides said that negotiations between Israel to send critical aid from the Mediterranean island to war-torn Gaza showed a positive outcome in reaching an agreement.

Before presenting the initiative in Brussels,

Cypriot Foreign Affairs Minister Constantinos Kombos told the press that strategic ties resulting in political trust are one of the three important factors supporting their approach.

Under the plan, the aid would be collected, inspected, and stored in Cyprus and then transported to the Gaza Strip via ships.

A committee including Israel will check the ships daily.

Warships will accompany the vessels to a designated spot in Gaza and will be sent to a safe, neutral area.

Israel initially hesitated with the proposal due to fears Hamas could take advantage of the opportunity to transport weapons but started to respond positively after a series of talks.
