EU reverses earlier announcement that it was suspending Palestinian aid

THE European Union (EU) has reversed its decision to suspend aid payments to the Palestinian authority, following conflicting statements from EU officials.

Initially, Enlargement Commissioner Oliver Varhelyi announced a €691 million euros or $728.8 million dollars aid suspension due to regional concerns.

However, this move faced immediate opposition.

Foreign Policy Chief Josep Borrell clarified that aid payments would not be suspended, emphasizing the harm it could cause to Palestinians and EU interests.

Amidst the disagreement, Luxembourg’s Foreign Minister Jean Asselborn argued that such decisions should be made collectively by the 27 member states.

Meanwhile, Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares expressed his disagreement with Varhelyi’s initial decision.

In response to this dispute, the European Commission revealed plans for an urgent review of EU aid, clarifying that payments were not suspended.

The objective is to ensure funding does not indirectly support terrorism and assess adjustments in support programs.
