Hamas responds to Israel’s ceasefire proposal as fighting enters eighth month

THE Egyptian foreign ministry revealed it has received feedback from Hamas concerning Israel’s proposal for a ceasefire including the amendments offered by the group for hostage exchange.

Mediators will study the response to plan their next move before coordinating with the parties concerned.

Mediators from Egypt and Qatar are at the forefront of the ongoing ceasefire talks.

In the last round of talks held last month, Israel demanded that Hamas release 33 living hostages — women, female soldiers, men over 50, and men who are in serious health conditions.

However, Hamas said they could only release 18 hostages and offered to return the bodies of 15 dead hostages to reach the number demanded by Israel.

In exchange for hostages held captive by Hamas, Israel must release hundreds of Palestinian prisoners and slowly remove Israeli troops from the Gaza Strip to allow the flow of humanitarian aid and the return of civilians to their homes.

Hamas previously warned to suspend all negotiations for a ceasefire once Israel attacks Rafah. However, mediators are slowly able to reach a breakthrough after months of stalled negotiations.
