Indonesia ignores hackers’ $8 million demand after massive cyberattack

INDONESIA refused to pay the $8 million ransom money demanded by a hacking group following a massive cyberattack.

Hackers infiltrated Indonesia’s national data center disrupting services of more than 200 government agencies at both the national and regional levels.

The cyberattack started on the 20th of June.

The attack compromised hundreds of government services since last Thursday and caused long delays at the capital’s main airport, with long lines formed at immigration gates.

The attackers demanded an $8 million ransom in exchange for access to the data held hostage by the hacking group.

Authorities at home and abroad joined forces in investigating the attack and to retrieve data held hostage by the hackers.

The hacking group used ransomware, known as Brain Cipher, to make government data inaccessible through encryption.

Immigration services at airports and elsewhere are now functional but efforts continue to restore other government services.
