Kishida visits Fukushima Nuclear Plant ahead of final decision on wastewater discharge date

JAPANESE Prime Minister Fumio Kishida visited the tsunami-wrecked Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant on Sunday ahead of the impending release of wastewater into the Pacific Ocean.

The Prime Minister made his trip to Fukushima just hours after returning from a summit with Biden and Yoon at the American presidential retreat in Camp David, Maryland.

According to Prime Minister Kishida, the impending release of the treated radioactive wastewater into the sea cannot be postponed.

This is amid the criticisms and opposition from various experts and activists who rallied in recent weeks to oppose the plan.

Kishida insisted that the move is safe, but his administration will do its utmost support to fishing communities from the potential impact of rumors during the discharge project.

Kishida saw wastewater filtering and dilution facilities in the plant.

He also met with plant and company executives.

Two years have passed since the Japanese government has announced its plan to dump treated radioactive wastewater into the Pacific Ocean, and it has faced strong opposition from various experts, Fukushima residents, and various Japanese, South Korean, and Chinese groups who worry about the further damage of marine life and livelihood.
