Qatar says negotiations continue to restore Israel-Hamas truce

THE short-lived truce between Israel and Hamas expired on Friday but Qatar said efforts are being made to revive it.

The weeklong truce served as a temporary respite after nearly 50 days of devastation and thousands of deaths.

Qatar is in touch with Egyptian officials to extend the truce.

If successful, the new deal would see the release of 10 Israeli captives as well as the release of 30 Palestinian prisoners.

Qatar urged Israel to stop violence in the Gaza Strip noting that bombardment of the enclave is complicating its mediation efforts.

But National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir accused Hamas of violating the truce after its military wing Al-Qassam Brigades carried out an armed operation in Jerusalem that killed several Israeli settlers hours before the ceasefire expired.

The humanitarian pause agreed on by Israel and Hamas took effect on November 24 and ended on November 30.

The humanitarian pause saw the release of 81 Israeli citizens and 24 foreign nationals.

As many as 240 Palestinian prisoners were freed by Israel.

At least 136 Israeli hostages remain captive in Gaza based on the latest update on Friday, December 1.
