Rising waters trap thousands, cut off electricity in Myanmar

ABOUT 10,000 people were forced to evacuate, some of them trapped in the roofs of their houses after floods had risen above dangerous levels in Myanmar.

Residents in Myitkyina, a city in Myanmar’s northern Kachin state, were the most affected.

The severe weather cut off electricity and phone lines while rivers in the region have burst their banks after days of torrential rain.

Many people waded through neck-high water carrying their belongings over their heads after the floodwaters rose quickly.

The series of devastating floods across Myanmar last year wreaked havoc in the lives of thousands more residents as it left a massive trail of destruction. Many houses, temples, and infrastructure were ruined and roads were also destroyed in flood-affected communities.
