Sweden records highest-ever share of wind power

Sweden records highest-ever share of wind power

ENERGY think-tank Ember revealed how Sweden maintained a strong wind energy performance for the first two months of 2023.

Sweden generated 26 percent of its electricity from wind in January and 27 percent in February.

Energy think tank Ember said this is the highest-ever share of wind power generation in the Scandinavian country.

Nicolas Fulghum, Energy, and Climate Data Analyst at Ember said that the milestone comes after years of investment in renewables, with Sweden’s efforts now paying off.

According to Fulghum, higher wind generation makes Sweden’s grid more resilient against droughts, and protects consumers from high costs, while the initiative could make the country a model for other European countries.

“Higher wind generation makes Sweden’s grid more resilient against droughts and protects consumers from high costs…Sweden is set for further benefits to costs, security, and climate. Other European countries could see the same if they follow suit,” said Nicolas Fulghum, Energy and Climate Data Analyst.

To achieve its clean energy targets, Sweden has been pouring money into renewable energy, causing its wind capacity to double in 2018 and with the country now boasting nearly 5,000 turbines.

Sweden aims to reach 100 percent renewable electricity production by 2040 and achieve net-zero emissions by 2045.
