U.S. CDC, WHO tracking new Coronavirus variant after mutated strain detected in Michigan

RESEARCHERS are tracking the highly mutated Coronavirus variant dubbed BA.X or BA.2.86.

A case has been detected in Michigan following the variant’s discovery of cases in other countries.

The U.S. CDC made the announcement on Thursday as it was tracking the said variant after the University of Michigan Laboratory detected a case among its sequencing efforts.

U.S. Media reported that the person infected with BA.X is an older adult who lives in Washtenaw County.

The patient currently has mild symptoms and is not hospitalized.

The detection of the BA.X comes as Michigan reported increases in cases and hospitalizations and deaths due to COVID-19.

According to reports, as of Friday, Michigan has 201 COVID-19 patients currently in hospitals across the state, which is nearly double the figures from earlier this August.
