A 17-meter-long male sperm whale was found dead in Yeh Leh Beach in West Bali’s Jembrana District over the weekend.
The cause of death is still unknown but local marine and fisheries officials said that the whale must have died of sickness.
“The body looked skinny and sickly,” says Permana Yudiarso of local marine and fisheries.
Forensic experts have identified bleeding in the sperm whale’s lungs and its colon was found to be filled with fluids.
Local marine and fisheries will conduct a necropsy test which will take three weeks before finally burying the carcass.
To recall, in 2018, a similar incident also happened when a sperm whale was found dead and the whale’s stomach contained 100 plastic cups and 25 plastic bags, and on April 1, two dead whales washed ashore on the same beach in Bali.
