China starts review on Australian wine tariffs

CHINA’s Commerce Ministry confirmed it has officially started reviewing its heavy tariffs on Australian wines.

The review took place almost a month after  Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese traveled to China for a four-day state visit.

The trade relations between Australia and China faced difficulties in 2020, resulting in billions of dollars of trade war affecting a range of Australian goods ranging from barley, red meat, lobsters, coal, timber, and wine.

China also removed tariffs on Australian barley in September 2021 as trade tensions eased.

China is Australia’s largest trading partner and its sixth-largest foreign direct investor.

Local officials hope the heavy tariffs on Australian wine could be removed as soon as March next year.
