Civil defense minister urges Swedes to prepare for possibility of war

CIVIL Defense Minister Carl-Oskar Bohlin warned Swedes that 200 years of being a peaceful country should not lead its citizens into a false sense of security.

Bohlin made the statement during an annual security defense conference in the ski resort village of Sälen in Western Sweden.

The civil defense minister urged everyone to help strengthen Sweden’s total defense system and warned the possibility of a war.

He proposed for council officials to secure refuge points as well as to create an emergency water plan and food supply.

Bohlin also urged private individuals to take responsibility for preparing their homes in the event of conflict and for employees to prepare themselves during difficult circumstances in their workplace.

Meanwhile, Swedish Foreign Minister Tobias Billström assured that Sweden will be a reliable, supportive, and committed NATO member that will be active not only in the defense and security of NATO’s border with Russia but also on Europe’s southern border and the Arctic. Moreover, Billström said that Sweden’s much-awaited NATO membership would be the most significant change in the country’s security policy in more than 200 years.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also attended the conference virtually wherein he stressed the importance of international support for Ukraine in its all-out war against Russia.

The annual security conference started on Sunday and ended on Tuesday, the 9th of January.
