Pakistan, Iran restore diplomatic ties after trading missile strikes

PAKISTANI and Iranian foreign ministers decided to de-escalate tensions from both sides after targeting each other with drone and missile attacks this week.

Both foreign ministers emphasized the “brotherly relations” between both countries and chose to de-escalate amid fears of further instability in the region.

Tensions started after Iran launched a missile and drone attack against the armed group Jaish Al-Adl in Pakistan’s southwestern border province of Balochistan which killed two people.

In less than 48 hours, Pakistan retaliated by targeting armed groups inside Iran’s territory which killed nine people.

The tit-for-tat attacks resulted in the withdrawal of ambassadors from their respective capitals.

The reciprocal attacks took place amid the onslaught of crises in the Middle East which started from the conflict between Israel and Hamas, the exchange of gunfire with Iran-backed Hezbollah, followed by Iran-backed groups targeting United States forces in Iraq and Syria as well as American and British forces trading strikes with Houthi rebels.

Ambassadors from Iran and Pakistan are expected to return to their respective posts following talks for de-escalation on Friday.
