Myanmar’s junta extends state of emergency for six more months

UNUSUAL circumstances urged Myanmar’s embattled junta to further extend the state of emergency which has been in place since 2021.

Myanmar’s military chief said extending the state of emergency was necessary to bring the nation back into a state of stability.

The embattled junta made the announcement as the alliance of anti-coup forces and ethnic armed groups slowly regained strength.

The extension was announced on the eve of the third anniversary of the military coup.

Myanmar marked three years since the military overthrew the democratically elected government on February 1, 2021.

Data from the United Nations showed more than two million people have been displaced by the violence.

This is the fifth time the state of emergency has been extended in Myanmar since a military coup took place three years ago.
