Africa to host BRICS Summit in late August

SOUTH Africa’s Gauteng will play host to the 15th BRICS Summit in late August as confirmed by Minister of the Presidency, Mondli Gungubele.

This year’s BRICS Summit will be held under the theme: BRICS and Africa, partnership for mutually accelerated growth, sustainable development, and inclusive multilateralism.

BRICS is a group of emerging economies consisting of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.

It accounts for more than 40 percent of the world’s population.

The group also accounts for more than 40 percent of the global population and almost a quarter of the global GDP.

It can be noted that the Russian Ambassador to Saudi Arabia Sergey Kozlov, said the kingdom is interested in joining the BRICS group.

To recall, this year, BRICS plans to decide whether to admit new members and what criteria they would have to meet.

South Africa assumed the chairmanship of BRICS on January 1 of this year, taking over from China.
