ASEAN ministers struggle to unite on Myanmar conflict

FOREIGN ministers representing the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) called for regional unity in addressing the conflict in Myanmar.

The 10 member States of ASEAN, which includes Myanmar, have been pushing for the generals of the military junta to implement a five-point peace plan.

On Wednesday, foreign ministers representing the Southeast Asian bloc gathered in Jakarta for one of their regular conferences where they emphasized unity in addressing the ongoing issue.

Differences between ASEAN member states surfaced after Thailand’s caretaker government invited the bloc’s foreign ministers last month to an informal meeting, with an aim of ‘fully re-engaging’ with Myanmar’s military rulers, with several leaders missing the talks or only sending representatives.

ASEAN was also scheduled to hold meetings with ambassadors from the United States, China, Russia, and other major partners this week.

The ASEAN ministers were expected to release a statement on their deliberations at a conference this week on Thursday but no statement has been made public yet.
