Blind grandma, a young girl receives over one million baht in aid

DONATIONS for a four-year-old girl and her 68-year-old blind grandma in the Isaan province of Buriram reached more than one million baht after their struggles moved the hearts of the people nationwide.

The story of their hardships and struggles came to light after four-year-old Toey’s Thai teacher, Phatcharin “Aoom” Esatee, posted their situation online in the hope of receiving aid for her student.

The teacher posted videos of Toey and her blind grandmother on TikTok wherein the young girl could be seen managing all the household chores, including washing clothes, doing dishes, and even assisting her grandmother with the cooking.

The grandmother strives to fetch Toey back home every single day despite her blindness.

Upon visiting her student’s house, the teacher discovered there were holes in the roof and dirt on the floor, and they use a wooden bench as their bed.

The blind grandmother earns 1,400 baht per month from the government’s disabled and elderly allowances, and if money runs short, they are forced to eat rice with salt to survive.

As their story went viral, the Thai teacher’s followers started donating money, the provincial administrative department volunteered to renovate their house, and a famous Thai news reporter pledged to shoulder Toey’s educational expenses until she finishes her doctor’s degree.

The blind grandmother cried hard after receiving such a generous amount of aid and urged the relevant government agency to close the donation as the money was more than enough for them.
