China to implement export controls on gallium, germanium

CHINA is set to limit exports of gallium and germanium, two components used for chips and radar systems.

This is according to the circular issued by the country’s Ministry of Commerce on Monday.

According to the statement, the ministry will implement export control on the two mentioned components to protect China’s national security and interests.

Exporters are required to apply to the Ministry of Commerce for an export license and report the contract and utility prior to shipping them out.

According to the statement, anyone who violates this order and releases these components without permission from the ministry will be liable to the law.

The said export control will be effective on the 1st of August this year.

It can be remembered that germanium is used in infrared technology, fiber optic cables, and solar cells while gallium is an important component of semiconductors for electronics technology.

Meanwhile, American firm AXT said its Chinese subsidiary Tongmei would immediately proceed to apply for the permits.
