China’s Xi meets Indonesia’s President-elect Subianto

INDONESIAN President-elect Prabowo Subianto held talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing as part of the former’s three-day official trip to the country.

Subianto flew to China at the invitation of President Xi.

His three-day trip to the neighboring Asian country started on Sunday.

China is trying to establish ties with the future leader of Indonesia – the largest economy in Southeast Asia amid the competition for regional influence with Washington.

The visit made Prabowo the first President-elect to accept an invitation from a foreign leader for official talks even before being sworn in.

Subianto teamed up with outgoing President Joko Widodo‘s eldest son and mayor of Solo, Gibran Rakabuming Raka. who ran as vice President.

His rivals threatened to file a complaint to the Constitutional Court amid allegations of widespread fraud after he amassed almost 60 percent of the votes.

The former general will replace Widodo and assume office in October.
