Cyprus president welcomes U.N. envoy for second meeting

THE UN Secretary-General’s personal envoy for Cyprus, Maria Angela Holguin Cuéllar, met with both presidents of the ethnically divided island country over plans for reunification talks.

Christodoulides welcomed Holguín for their second meeting at the Presidential Palace on Friday.

According to the Cypriot leader, he told Holguin during their first meeting that vast majority of Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots wish to be reunited.

Holguin also held talks with Turkish Cypriot President Ersin Tatar on the same day.

Cyprus became ethnically divided in 1974 when Turkiye invaded in response to a military coup supported by Greece.

Only Turkiye recognizes the declaration of independence by the Turkish Cypriots in 1983 that paved the way for separate political identification with the Greek Cypriots.

Cyprus last week promised a package of 14 measures to the breakaway Turkish Cypriots in an aim to win their trust.

The measures were revealed ahead of a UN-brokered meeting to revive peace talks in the ethnically divided island country.
