INAASAHAN ng Department of Justice (DOJ) na mapapauwi na sa Pilipinas si expelled Cong. Arnolfo “Arnie” Teves Jr. matapos katigan ng Court of Appeals ng Timor-Leste ang extradition request ng gobyerno sa dating kongresista.
Sa pahayag na pinadala ni DOJ Spokesperon Asec. Mico Clavano, sinabi nitong panalo na ang bansa sa extradition case matapos ipagbigay-alam ng Attorney-General ng Timor-Leste na pinagbigyan ng korte ang pagpapauwi kay Teves sa Pilipinas.
Pero ang kampo ni Teves, tila minaliit ang naging pahayag ng DOJ.
Ayon sa legal counsel ni Teves na si Atty. Ferdinand Topacio, hindi pa tapos ang laban dahil maaari pa nilang iapela ang desisyon ng korte.
Maliban diyan, option din nila na mag-apply ng political asylum para hindi ma-extradite si Teves.
“Not so fast, Mr. Clavano. You have not won. Not by a long shot. For one, the judgment is still appealable, a recourse that we have every intention of taking. Then we still have the option of political asylum,” ayon kay Atty. Ferdinand Topacio, Legal Counsel ni Arnie Teves Jr.
Dagdag pa ni Topacio – kahit na mapauwi sa Pilipinas ang kaniyang kliyente ay kailangan pa nilang patunayan na may sala nga si Teves sa akusasyong pagpatay kay Negros Oriental Gov. Roel Degamo.
“And even if you bring Mr. Teves back, you will still have to prove him guilty in the face of recantations by all witnesses previously against him who were tortured and intimidated into testifying falsely against him,” saad ni Topacio.
DOJ, tiwala na hindi na magbabago ang desisyon ng korte para sa pagpapauwi ni Ex. Cong. Teves sa bansa
Kinumpirma naman ni DOJ Usec. Raul Vasquez na may 30-day period para sa paghahain ng kabilang kampo ng apela.
Pero aniya kahit pa umapela ang kampo ni Teves ay maaaring hindi na magbabago pa ang desisyon ng Court of Appeals lalo’t kung wala namang bagong maihahaing argumento.
“Unless there is a new matter or pieces of evidence to be presented, normally the same body will maintain their decision. We are very confident that same decision will be tendered on the motion of the reconsideration,” saad ni Usec. Raul Vasquez, Department of Justice.
Aniya, naipaliwanag nang maayos ng gobyerno ng Pilipinas na independent ang Judiciary sa bansa at nabibigyan ang mga akusado ng due process sa kasong kanilang kinahaharap.
Wala pang natatanggap na pormal na kopya ang DOJ sa desisyon pero ito aniya ang posibleng dahilan kaya pinagbigyan ng Timor-Leste Gov’t ang extradition request kay Teves.
“The certain issues that they raised where found to be baseless. Number 1, that the judiciary is not independent in the PH, second, the judicial system is not working, the accused would not have chance to have fair and partial trial, 4th, if ever they will be brought back in, he would be subjected to torture or possibly be killed while in detention and the event of trial, that he would be meted convicted,” dagdag pa ni Usec. Vasquez.
Sinabi rin ni Usec. Vasquez na matagal nang umapela si Teves ng political asylum at hindi ito napagbigyan ng Timor-Leste Gov’t.
Sinabi naman ni DOJ Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla sa isang pahayag na matatapos na rin ang ginagawang “hide and seek” ni Teves at hindi na rin nito matatakasan ang mga patong-patong na kaso nito sa Pilipinas.
“Arnie Teves’ hide and seek tactics have come to an end, he can no longer evade the legal consequences of his actions and should answer the charges fair and square,” ayon naman kay Sec. Jesus Crispin Remulla, Department of Justice.
Matatandaan na noong Marso 2023 nang mangyari ang assassination kay Roel Degamo at sa 10 iba pa sa compound ng mga Degamo.
Si Teves ang itinuturong mastermind ng naturang pagpatay at pagkasugat ng 18 indibidwal.
Naaresto si Teves sa Timor-Leste noong nakaraang Marso.
Ang biyuda ni Roel na si Pamplona, Negros Oriental Mayor Janice Degamo naging emosyonal naman.
Sa pahayag, sinabi niya na napakahirap ng laban nito sa pagkakamit ng katarungan para sa kaniyang asawa dahil hindi rin aniya tumitigil ang mga natatanggap niyang banta sa kaniyang buhay.

But it was the memory of Roel and his undying love for his fellow NegOrenses that keeps pushing me to fight. I will not be silent as the men who murdered my husband continue to terrorize our province,” ayon naman kay Mayor Janice Degamo, Pamplona, Negros Oriental.
