Dubai inaugurates world’s largest waste-to-energy facility

SHEIKH Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, initiated the opening of the first phase of the largest waste-to-energy facility in Warsan.

The Crown Prince said the remarkable project reinforces Dubai’s status as a global leader in sustainable infrastructure.

Sheikh Hamdan said the $1.1 billion facility is capable of generating 220 megawatt-hours of renewable energy and providing power to 135,000 residential units.

Two of the plant’s five lines are now in operation.

The plant currently processes about 2,300 tonnes of solid waste daily.

Once completed, the facility can process 2 million tonnes of waste per year.

Just recently, Dubai has pledged to invest $54 billion to triple its contribution to its renewables base by 2030.

The newest initiative was announced months before the UAE hosts the UN climate talks in November this year.
