Finland’s new president takes office, to steer country amid shifting geopolitics

AFTER taking office as President of Finland, former Prime Minister Alexander Stubb signaled that he was prepared to steer the Nordic nation’s security and foreign policy in the wake of changing geopolitics.

The 55-year-old leader vowed to do everything in his power to promote the welfare of the Finnish people and urged solidarity and unity among all citizens.

Finland held a second round of elections on February 11 after the nine candidates competing for the presidential seat failed to secure enough votes during the first round on January 28.

A candidate must obtain more than 50 percent of votes to win the presidency.

He had replaced President Sauli Niinistö, who officially stepped down after holding the position for two six-year terms. During his term, Niinistö witnessed Finland became the 31st member of NATO on April 4, 2023.
