Firecracker explosion kills 12 people, injures over 100 in Thailand

DEATH toll from a firecracker explosion in Thailand rose from 10 to 12, with the remains of two unidentified persons sent for DNA checks in the Thai Province of Narathiwat.

Thick smoke billowed from the remains of a warehouse at the Muno Market in Sungai Kolok District where illegal firecrackers have been stored.

Authorities believe the welding during construction work on the said warehouse triggered the explosion.

Roughly 1,000kg of gunpowder detonated from the warehouse, killing 12 people and injuring 121 people, with two severely wounded.

Of this number, at least 111 individuals or more had been discharged from the hospital.

Approximately 300 houses or more have been damaged by the blast.

Meanwhile, the owners of the ill-fated warehouse face charges of negligence.

Invoking martial law, troops and provincial police seized 133 cardboard boxes and 20 sugar sacks containing fireworks and pyrotechnic materials from four nearby shops authorities declared as illegal.

The items seized belonged to the owner of the ill-fated fireworks warehouse.
