AS a gesture of assistance for a fresh start, the provincial government of Samar has provided former rebels in their area with proper housing.
A home is not just a physical structure; it symbolizes feelings, memories, and one’s identity. Within a home, family members strengthen unity and create beautiful memories filled with peace.
Therefore, an important step towards achieving peace in Samar province was celebrated and organized by the government in the said province.
This was done by providing housing to former rebels who are now allies of the government against the remaining members of the communist terrorist group CPP-NPA-NDF.
The said program, called “Saad nga Balay,” was held in San Jose De Buan, Samar, funded by the Samar Provincial Government with up to four million pesos.
Attending the ceremony were Senator Robinhood Padilla, Commander of the 8th Infantry Division of the Philippine Army MGen. Camilo Ligayo, former rebel leader Tito Labong, and officials from the Provincial Government.
In his speech, Senator Padilla emphasized to the former rebels the importance of their commitment to the government, along with the assurance that the government is always ready to help them.
“We have a running government. What we need to do is to help that government run correctly,” said Sen. Robin Padilla, Republic of the Philippines.
In connection with this, as assistance, the senator’s office added 200,000 pesos worth of support for a housing unit.
The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) also distributed 10,000 pesos in assistance under the AICS or Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situation program for beneficiaries in the area.
Meanwhile, Commander MGen. Camilo Ligayo of the 8th ID commended the decision of the former rebels to return to the government.
“To our Peacebuilders, this day marks the beginning of a new chapter in your lives. May this endeavor open doors to new possibilities and broaden our vision for the future. Through our continuous efforts and cooperation, let us make meaningful strides forward,” said MGen. Camilo Ligayo, Commander, 8ID, PA.
Currently, ten (10) houses have been completed while the remaining seven (7) are still being constructed.
The “Saad nga Balay” program aims to support former rebels by providing them with decent housing to pave the way for them to start their lives anew after surrendering to the government.
