UNREST in New Caledonia’s capital Noumea has been contained, according to the French interior and overseas minister.
The violence which started earlier this month killed seven people and left a significant trail of destruction while hundreds more were injured.
The French territory has seen decades of tensions between those loyal to France and indigenous people seeking independence.
At the heart of the riots were reforms passed by the French government to give tens of thousands of non-indigenous residents voting rights in the Pacific territory, which Indigenous people saw as a threat to their influence and affect their participation in future elections.
French President Emmanuel Macron declared a state of emergency on May 15 and deployed hundreds of heavily armed police officers to regain control of the main road connecting the capital with the airport after it was blocked by protesters.
Mass evacuations of foreigners residing in the archipelago were also launched at the height of the violent clashes and deadly riots.
France also lifted the ban on the TikTok social media app in New Caledonia which the government said was being used to spread disinformation on the tensions that rocked Pacific territory.
