G20 to be renamed as G21 after African Union inclusion

INDIAN Prime Minister Narendra Modi made the announcement in an opening address to this year’s G20 Summit in the Indian capital of New Delhi.

Modi invited AU chair Azali Assoumani to take a seat alongside world leaders.

During the announcement, it can be seen that Indian Prime Minister Modi’s principal nameplate at the first session of the G20 Summit read ‘Bharat’ which is said to be the indigenous name of the Indian Republic.

The two-day summit, themed “One Earth · One Family · One Future”, started earlier on Saturday and is scheduled to focus on inclusive growth, digital innovation, climate resilience, and equitable global health access, among other topics.

As of present, there are 21 members in the group.

These are Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, South Korea, Japan, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, the United Kingdom, The United States, the European Union and the African Union.

Chinese President Xi Jinping did not attend the summit in New Delhi.

He sent his premier, Li Chiang, as his representative.

Russian President Vladimir Putin was also notably absent, with Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov as his representative.
