THE ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine was one of the topics addressed during German Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s recent trip to China.
In a conference in Beijing, Scholz acknowledged that “China’s word carries weight in Russia” which was why he asked Chinese President Xi Jinping to exert pressure in Moscow to end the war with the Ukrainians.
The German chancellor also emphasized that the Russia-Ukraine war was having very considerable negative effects on security in Europe but noted how both countries can contribute to a “just peace to Ukraine.”
He also asked for fair competition as Chinese products flood the European market, to which Xi responded, stating that the German chancellor must look at industry overcapacity objectively.
Meanwhile, Chinese officials told the German chancellor that China is willing to import more high-quality German products. China made the offer amid attempts by the United States to contain Beijing, over security, advanced technology, and other issues.
